Review: Knee Deep by Jolene B. Perry

Synopsis:  Shawn is the guy Ronnie Bird promised her life to at the age of fourteen. He's her soul mate. He's more uptight every day, but it's not his fault. His family life is stressful, and she's adding to it. She just needs to be more understanding, and he'll start to be the boy she fell in love with. She won’t give up on someone she’s loved for so long.

Luke is her best friend, and the guy she hangs with to watch girlie movies in her large blanketopias. He's the guy she can confide in before she even goes to her girlfriends, and the guy who she's playing opposite in Romeo and Juliet. Now her chest flutters every time he gets too close. This is new. Is Ronnie falling for him? Or is Juliet? The lines are getting blurry, but leaving one guy for another is not something that a girl like Ronnie does.

Shawn’s outbursts are starting to give her bruises, and Luke’s heart breaks as Ronnie remains torn. While her thoughts and feelings swirl around the lines between friendship and forever, she’s about to lose them both.

Review:  Knee Deep is a new contemporary novel by Jolene B. Perry.  I would like to start by saying that the cover is beautiful, and is what initially drew me towards this book tour.

Knee Deep covers the very tough topic of relationship abuse, which may make some readers uncomfortable.  I think this story is something that all young adults should read, so that they can get a realistic view of what abuse is.  Girls that are fourteen, as Ronnie is when she begins her relationship with Shawn, aren't really emotionally prepared to deal with this type of situation.  Often times they will justify the abuse, or accept responsibility for it.  This is a topic I have studied in my last two Social Work classes, and I think that Jolene B. Perry did an excellent job of depicting this situation.  She showed the emotions that both Ronnie and Shawn are feeling - as well as the emotions of those outside the abusive relationship - Luke.  She showed how the relationship starts off good, and then slowly the abuser demonstrates more signs of the classic batterer.  I really felt for Ronnie in this story and I really wanted her to get away from Shawn.

Despite the fact that Shawn is a batterer, there were times that I really felt for him too.  The way his dad treats him - his situation at home - is awful.  The situation at home causing Shawn to be the way he is, is also a true to life scenario.  Those that grow up in a home with violence are 100% more likely to be violent themselves.

I also really felt for Luke.  Luke is goofy and lovable, and always there for Ronnie.  I really wanted Ronnie to wake up and realize the beautiful guy she had right there all along.  I could really feel for Luke, as he struggled with watching Ronnie going through this abusive relationship and being powerless to help her.

Overall, this was an excellent read.
