Coral Russell - Summer Splash Guest Post - What Are Your Thoughts on Tradition?

What are your thoughts on tradition?
by Hector from Amador Lockdown

My family, my culture is built on tradition. Anglos do not mix with Mexicans. A girl is not supposed to dance until her quiceanera or fifteenth birthday. Papa rules the house and we have to listen to what he tells us to do or behave.

I work twelve hours a day, six days a week in a shirtwaist factory making dress shirts. They hire young woman because we're quick. The problem is they lock us in to make sure that we stay through our shift. All the money must go to my family, but my mama sneaks me pennies so I can go downtown and have fun on Sundays after church.

I broke one of the traditions. I met someone that, according to my tradition, I have no business talking to. I don't care. I can't help myself.

La iglesia, the Catholic Church, has so many traditions I can't keep up with them. I should have paid better attention. When you die you're supposed to go to heaven or hell. I think I'm dead. There was a terrible accident. But I don't know where I am right now. Purgatory maybe? I should have paid closer attention in church. There is this black shadow following me and you know what they say, “The devil never sleeps alone.”
