Review & Giveaway: Dissolve by Andrea Heltsley

Synopsis:  Everything seemed to be going right for Cora. She had a wonderful fiance, a great best friend and a fulfilling life. One day, a tragic event caused that life to crumble around her. She turned to her best friend in her time of need. They embarked on a search for answers, delving deeper into a web of magic and destruction. The closer they got to the truth, the more questions they had. To Cora, magic was the stuff of fairy tales. Immersed into a very different kind of world, the real storm was just beginning to take hold.

“It felt like I was nowhere yet everywhere all at once. I was invisible and completely panicked. The millions of pieces I had dissolved to drift on the breeze and away from my nightmares. It was kind of like floating weightless in a pool, perfectly relaxing. The warm breeze from the window embraced and soothed me. I let the air current carry me as far as it could through the summer city.”

“Defeated, I closed my eyes and took a few calming breaths trying to relax myself. I pictured the dandelion in the park today and took a deep breath as to blow the fluffy seeds in all directions. I pretended I was light and fluffy and started to feel a tingling in my body. I began to feel as light as the dandelion seeds and soon I felt like mist floating. This time, I tried to keep myself in the room, swirling in a humid block.”

My Review:  I would categorize Dissolve as new adult.  Or heroine, Cora, is a new adult, planning her wedding.  Cora's life seems to be on track, and then one night she goes out, and someone puts something in her drink.  She sick for several days.  The second morning she wakes up to find her fiance brutally murdered.  What would you do in this situation?  I'd freak out.  Cora does too, but something happens to her that isn't likely to happent to you or me.  She dissolves into particles and reappears covered in blood at her best friend, Nessa's house.  Together the two go on the run to escape the person who dosed Cora's drink, and try to figure things out.  Cora works on dealing with her new "powers", which include dreams that come true, and along the way they meet more people with powers.

Cora and Nessa are both likable.  Cora is sweet and Nessa is a good any loyal friend.  They have a very strong friendship.  My only problems with them is that they very calmly accept situations and information that I would be flipping out about and that they don't speak like people my age would speak, ya know?  There is no use of contractions.  I find that when authors write this way it seems a little stilted or stuffy.  But moving on...

The premise of the book is very unique and different.  I haven't read anything like it.  It's more XMen than paranormal, but it's cool.  The plot keeps you turning pages trying to find out more.  Andrea Heltsley introduces us to a group of people that have amazing abilities like Cora and we get to know all of them - but I feel like I would have liked to get to know Cora better.  Hopefully she gets more focus in the next book.  Speaking of the next book, CLIFFHANGER!!!  It doesn't come out until next year which is frusterating because I really wanna know what happens next, and who the bad guy is.  I had someone in mind, but it appears I was wrong.

Overall, I rate the book a 3.75.  It has a ton of promise.  I hope book two well have more of intel on Cora and I really wanna know who the bad guy is!

About the Author:  I am a biology nerd who decided it was more fun writing than dissecting. I have written two novels and my third will be out this summer. I live on coffee and read like a robot. My husband and two italian greyhounds usually have to tear me away from the computer...imagine that. :)

The description didn't catch my attention at all. I thought it sounded boring. But as I scrolled down some words in your review caught my eye so I stopped to really read it and your review definitely made me more interested in this book! I am certainly going to check it out.

I'm really interested in reading books from The New Adult genre. The book sounds like a good read full of mystery, what a horrific opening to the story though! This book is going on my TBR list!
